Have you heard your Scout leader mention something called a “World Scout Jamboree” and wondered what all the fuss was about? Maybe you’ve seen some incredible photos on Facebook (Japan Jamboree) and thought “Wow, that looks amazing!” Well, you’re right, it IS amazing! Let me break it down for you…
A World Scout Jamboree is like the ultimate Scout camp, but on a massive global scale. Imagine 40,000+ Scouts from almost every country in the world coming together for an unforgettable adventure. It’s a chance to make friends from across the globe, experience different cultures, and learn new skills, all while having the time of your life.

When and Where?
World Scout Jamborees usually happen every four years in a different country. Recent Jamborees have been held in Japan (2015), the United States (2019), and South Korea (2023).
Who Can Go?
There are a few ways you can be part of this incredible experience:
- Participants: If you’re aged between 14 and 17 when the Jamboree takes place, you can apply to go as a participant. This is your chance to join a Unit with other Scouts from your country and dive headfirst into all the Jamboree action!
- Unit Leaders: Adult volunteers are needed to lead and support the Units. They play a vital role in ensuring everyone has a safe and amazing time.
- International Service Team (IST): This is where I come in! The IST are the backbone of the Jamboree. We’re the volunteers (aged 18+) who make everything happen behind the scenes, from running activities to building campsites to providing first aid. It’s hard work, but incredibly rewarding.
What Happens at a Jamboree?
Get ready for action-packed days filled with incredible experiences! Here’s a taste of what you can expect:
- Activities: Think zip lines, climbing walls, water sports, creative workshops, and so much more. There’s something for everyone, and you’ll get to try things you’ve never done before.
- Ceremonies: The opening and closing ceremonies are spectacular events with music, dancing, and inspiring speeches. There’s also a Culture Day where each country showcases its traditions and food.
- Swapping: Trading badges, scarves, and other souvenirs with Scouts from around the world is a Jamboree tradition. It’s a great way to make new friends and collect memories.
- Work (for the IST): As part of the IST, we work hard to ensure the Jamboree runs smoothly. It’s challenging but also a lot of fun, and the camaraderie amongst the IST is amazing.
- Off-site trips: Many Jamborees include opportunities to explore the host country. This might involve visiting historical sites, experiencing local culture, or even going on an adventure trek.
City Experiences
In recent years, the UK Contingent has added an extra special element to the Jamboree experience: City Experiences! After the main Jamboree, participants (and IST who choose to) spend a few days in a major city, soaking up the local culture. It’s a fantastic way to round off the adventure.
Tempted to join the adventure? Keep an eye out for announcements about the next World Scout Jamboree and start planning your trip! It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
