The World Scout Jamboree isn’t just about camping and activities; it’s also about connecting with Scouts from all corners of the globe. And what better way to do that than through the time-honoured tradition of Jamboree swapping?

Think of it as a global Scout market, where badges, scarves, and other goodies become currency for friendships and memories. Here’s everything you need to know to become a master swapper:
What to Swap
The possibilities are endless, but some popular items include:
- Badges: Jamboree branded (unit, contingent, fun badges), your local group badges, activity badges, and even badges with flags!
- Scarves/Neckerchiefs: Contingent, unit, and even your group scarf.
- Woggles: Contingent branded or handmade.
- Pin Badges: A classic!
- Wristbands: A fun and easy swap.
- Uniforms: Yes, you can even swap shirts! (More on that below)
- T-shirts: Jamboree branded or with unique designs.
- Water Bottles: Contingent branded or with cool designs.
- UK-themed items: Anything with a Union Jack is usually a hit.
How Much to Bring
This depends on your swapping style!
- Casual Swapper: A handful of badges and a spare scarf will do.
- Avid Swapper: Bring a larger selection of badges, scarves, and other goodies. Top Tip: Use two swap bags – one for your items and one for your newly acquired treasures. This keeps things organised and prevents accidental trades of items you want to keep!
- IST: You’ll likely have more time for swapping in the evenings, so bring a decent stash.
Variety is key! Bring a mix of badges to increase your trading options.
Uniform Swapping
Want to trade shirts? Pack a second uniform shirt! Most contingents provide two sets of badges, so you can keep one uniform for travel and ceremonies and have another for swapping. Keep your cleaner one for the journey home!
Swapping Etiquette
- Like for like: Generally, you’ll trade a badge for a badge, a scarf for a scarf, etc.
- Value for value: For larger or special edition items, you might need to trade multiple items or something of equal value.
- Fair trades: Make sure both parties are happy with the exchange.
- Adults with adults, young people with young people: This Jamboree rule helps prevent any unfair trades.
- No selling or buying: Swapping is about trading, not making a profit.
Where to Swap

- Everywhere! Queues, buses, ceremonies, paths, open spaces, cafes… the possibilities are endless.
- Designated swapping areas: The Jamboree may have specific tents or areas for swapping.
- “Boot fair” style: Lay out your items or browse what others have to offer. Top Tip: Swap with a friend so you can take turns browsing and watching your items.
Someone Gave Me a Badge!
Sometimes, Scouts will gift badges as a thank you or memento. Be gracious, and consider reciprocating if you’ve made a new friend.
Need Inspiration?
Check out my swaps from previous Jamborees to get some ideas! For America and Korea I took the equivalent of a stuffed school drawstring bag of swaps.
Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the unique experience of Jamboree swapping! It’s a fantastic way to connect with Scouts from around the world and create lasting memories.
